Warm weather is finally here to stay in Northeast Ohio! (For a little while at least.) After turning on their air conditioning units for the first time this year, many of our customers are finding that their equipment isn't offering much relief from the heat. Why isn’t your AC keeping you cool? Here are four possible reasons.

1. The air filter is dirty.
This is the most common problem. The air filter needs to be changed regularly. Dirty filters restrict airflow to your AC unit, which limits how much cool air can travel into your home.

2. The condenser is clogged.
The outside unit or condenser can get clogged by a buildup of dirt, leaves, grass, and other debris. A blocked condenser cannot eliminate heat, so the air conditioner cannot cool your home as a result.

3. Your AC is low on refrigerant.
Needless to say, a unit that is low on refrigerant cannot properly cool your home. It’s important to note that refrigerant is not naturally depleted like gas in a car. It is designed to be recirculated throughout your AC system. So if you need to add more refrigerant, then you clearly have a leak. Refrigerant leaks must be repaired by a professional AC repair technician - the sooner, the better.

4. Your ducts are leaking.
The air ducts carry cooled air into your home. Although your AC unit may be working just fine, leaky ducts will allow cooled air to escape into your attic, basement, or crawl space - everywhere except your living space.

Regular, preventive maintenance can help you identify and resolve these issues before they escalate into major problems. Maintaining your cooling system doesn't have to be expensive! An affordable, annual tune-up can extend the life of your equipment and help you avoid costly repairs in the future.
